Read the Founders

About

Republican, Democrat, Independent, liberal, conservative, libertarian, and progressive… we are all joined by the common set of principles espoused in the founding documents. The Constitution, the Declaration, and the Bill of Rights describe the fundamental principles of liberty and justice that form the core of our American experience. The purpose of Read the Founders, is to encourage all Americans to take a few minutes to remember and connect with the words and ideas that formed this great Republic.

To that end, I ask anyone with a blog or a podcast to publish on July 4th a favorite bit of text from – or a link to – the founding documents, or one of the other works from the Revolutionary Period. Perhaps you might even post an essay, song, poem, or painting inspired by the works of the Founders. Whatever inspires you about the founding of our country, I want you to share it with others.

My name is Stuart Maxwell, and I’ve started this project because I am filled with awe whenever I read the words of our Founders. It seems to me that few of us have reason to revisit those seminal texts once we’re out of our high school civics classes, and perhaps it would be useful to do so. I am not in any way an expert in Revolutionary history; I am hoping that this exercise will be educational for me, and that it will stimulate discussion and debate among those who choose to participate.
